Join more than 15,000 employers nationwide to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

What are carbon offsets?

Carbon offsets reduce carbon dioxide emissions by sponsoring clean air projects that balance or neutralize a certain amount of a person's carbon footprint. For example, the average car produces roughly 10,000 pounds of CO2 per year. With a carbon offset, a portion of a project such as renewable energy with wind, biodiesel, biomass and industrial efficiency, reduces the need for 10,000 pounds of CO2 in one year, balancing out the car's carbon emissions.

How much carbon dioxide are my employees emitting each year?

What can we do to reduce and offset?

CommutingGreen has partnered with TerraPass, a leading carbon offset organization focused on indivduals. TerraPass provides a simple, quick and affordable way to balance an employee's carbon footprint. They are currently funding nine projects (see example projects) that are audited each year by the non-profit Center for Resource Solutions, the country's leading authority on renewable energy certification. We have found the following to be the best approach for employers:

  • Reduce and Offset

You are already reducing your company's carbon emissions by promoting public transit and purchasing transit vouchers (commuterchecks) to encourage ridership. Carbon offsets are for those employees who drive to and from a park-n-ride to commute on a train or bus to work or for those employees who drive to and from work. Don't know how your employees commute to work? See an example survey that can be distributed electronically.

  • terrapass_decal TerraPass offers four annual offsets depending on how much an employee drives and what make and model car they own. The four annual passes range in price from $29.95 to $79.95 offsetting between 6,000 lbs of CO2 and 20,000 lbs of CO2. see offset decals
